believe me, the admissions staff LOVES to read about things other than shadowing physicians, volunteering at a hospital, etc. anything that sets you apart is a GOOD thing! they want to see that you are diverse with lots of different interests, and that you excel in areas other than science. ive even heard of applicants drawing a picture in the space left for the personal statement (i dont recommend THAT, butyou get the idea). i would mention that you play piano and have for 9 years and are an artist. although interests in egyptology and asian pop culture make you a cool and interesting person, they may not want to hear about ALL your likes and dislikes (that would go on forever!), so just focus on the accomplishments youre most proud of and the impressive stuff that shows you are focused and able to buckle down and work hard. by the by, medical schools love musicians! nothing is more boring than the typical biology major with a 3.5 who hangs out at the hospital 24/7 doing this and that. those students are plentiful and many get skipped over. you, on the other hand, with your diverse interests, may just catch their eye and they will want to know more about you and, hopefully, invite you in for an interview. i personally have a degree in theater, and talked about a few short plays i have written (i didnt include them because they included a fair amount of profanity), and touched on the fact that i was trained as an opera singe, and then moved on to talk about my volunteer experience and so forth. good luck; who knows maybe we’ll be in the same med school one day!

I would omit the golf reference and, if you’re Asian, I would also omit your interest in Asian culture–that’s almost a given and the golf reference is somewhat of a stereotypical insult about physicians.

Your other references are good, as they demonstrate that you have other interests and talents.

Just to plant a seed in your mind, Google Dr. Frank Netter. If you go to med school, you’ll use his medical illustrations. If you have an artistic talent, you might consider adding medical illustrations to your pursuits.

Special interests can be a great way to flush out a resume, especially if you want it to be a little longer. You could, as your objective, write “Well rounded, self-motivated individual seeking admission to a medical school with the goal of becoming . . . ” and then have a section of your resume (near the end, before your references) called “Special Interests” with those in it.

I would however change the wording to make your interests more active.

Special Interests:
- Studied piano for 9 years. Performed at many recitals. (also list any awards if you have any)
- Enjoys playing golf non-competitively.
- Reads and learns about Asian arts (drama, literature, and art forms) and Egyptology as hobbies.

An admissions committee could look positively at this. The piano part shows that you are dedicated and disciplined, the golf shows that you enjoy the outdoors and physical activity, and the arts show that you have interests outside of medicine and enjoy beauty.

This is an excellent basic X-Acto set that will cover just about any task unless you are highly specialized. If you are you need a much bigger set! Don’t buy the cheap imatations, I have used X-Acto for years and they have never let me down!

I was under the impression that it’s generally Not recommended to include one’s hobbies on a resume but perhaps on the job/school application.

Though not a hobby to just jump into, you could get into collecting coins, medals or tokens. There are a lot of coin clubs around as well as national groups for all aspects of numismatics.

I been using X-acto knives for decades. They haven’t changed and the quality is still top-notch. Some of the blades are not useful for me but I found the #17 and #18 blades (chisels) to be blades I wouldn’t have considered but I use them all of the time.

I removed the plastic insert on the top and taped the included magnetic strip to the wood box. This configuration leaves me room to store over 200 blades and all of the knives in the box. I work with stingray skins that are hard as rocks and these knives and blades make it easier to do precision cuts.

Check your community for craft groups. Like me, I attend a weekly sewing group where we do our respective needlepoint crafts such as knitting, cross stitching, crocheting, hardanger, etc. You will find that joining such groups/clubs is fun and productive. Your community might have a scrapbooking group/club as well. If you think you are (or want to try being) creative, these are great choices. Goodluck!

Check out a fly fishing club. Learning to tye flies is relaxing, allows you to be creative in the flies you tye and meet people that appreciate nature.

Well personally I scrapbook, bead and make jewelry, paint, sew, blow glass, tile grout designing, copper pipe wind chimes, silver smithing. I stay quite busy and can tell you that I spend almost as much time with all my hobby’s combined as I do my full time 50 hour a week job. But my work is sell-able. So I don’t mind.

Anything that comes out of you naturally, any creative activity that gives you satisfaction, helps you explore yourself, gives you joy, helps you to ‘relax’ and you never get tired of doing it ….is a hobby. You will have to discover your hobby by trying out new things and creative activities that you’ve never done before. It’s just a matter of exploring or discovering yourself.

There are several types of hobbies, like drawing, painting, craft, clay modelling, sculpture, stamp collection, coin collection, used matchbox collection (it’s weird but i know any people who do it), reading books, creative writing, etc

Few years ago – One sunday morning, when I saw the cartoon strips in the newspaper I felt like drawing similar cartoons. I tried it, I immediately got hooked, I rigorously practiced cartooning for one year, and guess what.. my cartoons suddenly became very popular among my friends and relatives… then in whole college.. and then I was hired by a newspaper and few other magazines as a freelance cartoonist. So you can also turn your hobby into a proffession. Although my field is entertainment media, I still do freelance cartooning.

Just experiment with different things and soon you’ll find your hobby. Go to about.com and search for hobbies on their site.

A hobby is something you do in your spare time, so if don’t know what they are, you must not have any. You can FIND a hobby by doing something you like, whether it’s writing, drawing, crafting, collecting something, gardening, restoring something, designing, inventing, whatever. The world is full of activities to choose from.

Chess, bridge, or other card games are great ways to meet people, and board games work as well. Lots of people play, and would like a place to go.
Charitable groups also work. You can knit for charity, organize fund raisers, raise awareness for something you care about, and meet other people who feel the same way. My niece met most of her best friends in high school that way.

Well I have a lot of hobbies they all take up so much time. Here it goes: playing harmonica, making soap/salt scrubs, dorodango (shiny mud balls), metal decting, crochet, hand sewn felt wallets, spinning records.

The hobby of numismatics is no longer an all male thing. There are many women now who are professional numismatist. They either have their own business or work in the field. They are very competitive collectors also. It used to be the men knew more about coins and the like, then the women collectors and that is no longer true. A lot spend a lot of time on their collections as well as traveling to local and major coin shows.

Seems interesting…lets see….

I’ll be 15 next month,from Serbia.

3-4 year old : I hated kindergarten.I was just crying all the time.My immunity fell, so I got really ill, and spent next 6 month lying in bed.When I got better, I’ve started taking classes of english,and I do it from then on.

5 year old(1999) :The war started.I was scared,but I was surrounded by my family all the time, so it was kind a ok.My mom and me were sleeping in basement.I remember my biggest fear was that someone will just show up on our doors one day, and kill us all.I never talked about that during those 90 days, so I couldn’t know it’s not that serious.

6 year old :I started going to preschool.I was crying in the first time,but than I relaxed and made friends I still hang with,so it was a really wonderful time.

7 year old : I’ve started going to school.

8 year old:I tool dancing classes for a couple of month

9 year old:I’ve started playing basketball and I played it for the next 2-3 years.I also started music shool,which I finished this school year.I play piano now.

11-12 : I played tennis that summer.

13:I started playing karate in the very beginning of 2008, and I played it for the next six month, but it was just a fase.

May 2008:I’ve started cooperating with UNICEF, went to a plenty of seminars,and I’m progressing:-)
July 2008:I’ve started working for a local radio station.It’s my second year,and I just love it!

I’m planning to start fitness in september.
I’ll also be a gymnasium(hihg school) student starting september.Perhaps I’ll take classes of guitar.

Perhaps you noticed:I had periodical hobbies I changed,by I found my three great loves:music,youth activism and journalism.And I’m happy soo far.
Well that’s my life,shortly. It was a pleasant expirience writing it! ))
