My Girlfriend and I are having a debate as to whether or not women had hobbies that took up inordinate amounts of their freetime. I play Dungeons & Dragons and routinely spend 8 or more hours on a saturday playing with my friends and spend a lot of time during the week preparing for the game.
I know there are many other hobbies men participate in that suck up this kind of time like restoring old cars, historical reenactment, any kind of collecting, etc.
So women what are your obsessive hobbies??? What do you do with your freetime, especially in today’s busy world?

My wife quilts like crazy. She spends at least an hour a day working on her quilts.

Scrapbooking for me. Usually takes me hours to do one layout. Costs alot of money for the supplies and it sucks you in and before you know it your addicted. Just like the video games men paly and your Dungeons and Dragons.

I read. You have to almost shout to get me out of the book and into reality. (I read series so more than one book is involved.) I also do plastic canvas obsessively. Another of my annoying habbits, if not a hobby, is putting everything in it’s proper place and constantly rearranging where things go. I can spend 12 hours reading 3 or 4 books in a row. I can spend upwards of 7 hours working a pattern or making a pattern for plastic canvas. I can literally spend a whole day putting things away and then start all over again in the morning. (After almost 17 years of marriage, my hubby has convinced me the sun will rise if I leave something NOT put away.)

Lots of women I know play online word games. These games become obsessive. Word games such as scrabble, literati, crossword puzzles, etc. They become quite the addiction.

I would say quilting. From picking what you want to do to buying fabric and then sewing it all togehter and then having it quilted and finishing. It takes a lot of time and effort and I know a lot of women that do this all the time. I have an aunt who everytime I see is working on a different blanket.

Any hobby you can think of can become obsessive… for men or women. But on a general what a lot of women get into here is a short list:
baking/cooking (yes, it is a hobby for some)
crocheting
knitting
painting
scrapbooking
sewing
spinning
quilting (different than just sewing)
weaving
woodworking
There tends to be a lot of time spent sharing our enthusiasm about our hobby with others as well as getting together in groups (online and off-line) to craft together or to discuss different aspects of each craft.

I have a friend who is an avid scrapbooker~ she has an entire room dedicated to all of her supplies, and she often scraps for an hour or more after putting the kids to bed. She goes to an all-night scrapbooking fair several times a year, and has CDs for creating neat effects with her pictures.
Then there is beading… buying all of the different beads and findings, creating the ‘perfect’ necklace/bracelet/etc. . .
Could Bunco be another? I’ve played for a few years now, and although it’s only a monthly event, that event does take some planning ~ especially when it’s my month to hostess. Determining the perfect theme, finding an awesome gift within the price limit to fit that theme, and getting the right foods for the women attending. . .
This isn’t necessarily gender-specific, but there is also coin collecting, which could bleed over to the metal-detecting hobby. Antique store perusing? Gardening? Shopping?
The lists can go on and on!

I also play D&D and my gf Roleplays online, as well as helps me DM and prepare my game. She also reads, writes, and watches anime at any time shes not doing homework.

Dungeons and Dragons! My husband and I are in a group that plays regularly at least 6 hours every Saturday night. Since I also GM every other Saturday, I spend time during the week preparing for the game. I also spend a lot of time entering custom material in the DM Genie software program that we use. (I am one of two women in our gaming group and we have been playing together for a number of years.)
In addition to D&D and related activities, I play City of Heroes, read, and play other video games on the PC, PS2, and Nintendo DS.

The hobby of numismatics is no longer an all male thing. There are many women now who are professional numismatist. They either have their own business or work in the field. They are very competitive collectors also. It used to be the men knew more about coins and the like, then the women collectors and that is no longer true. A lot spend a lot of time on their collections as well as traveling to local and major coin shows.

Well I have a lot of hobbies they all take up so much time. Here it goes: playing harmonica, making soap/salt scrubs, dorodango (shiny mud balls), metal decting, crochet, hand sewn felt wallets, spinning records.

Well personally I scrapbook, bead and make jewelry, paint, sew, blow glass, tile grout designing, copper pipe wind chimes, silver smithing. I stay quite busy and can tell you that I spend almost as much time with all my hobby’s combined as I do my full time 50 hour a week job. But my work is sell-able. So I don’t mind.
