Volunteer to work in one of your local charity shops, only an hour or two a week and you will meet tons of interesting people and you will be helping at the same time..

Another hobby that people really get back into is painting.. it seems that loads of people don’t paint at all once they leave school,,,

try photography.. the digital cameras out now aren’t that terribly expensive and unlike film.. you can delete what you don’t like and not have to pay for it to be developed. its fun and there are a ton of things to take pictures of.. flowers, pets, anything really.. whatever you find visually interesting. and its pretty rewarding when its hung on a wall and people comment on it.. =)

There is tons of people that need volunteers from churches like in food lockers to Habitat of Humanity. Cities need help at parks and live theater, scouting needs female chaperones for venturing(especially seascouting).
So you could help with tools, boating, organizing a clothes closet at schools to provide decent coats for the children in winter. So many ways to help, interesting and fun!

    G’Day mnspirit69,
I have several hobbies, woodwork is my favorite but I am learning stained glass or lead lighting, it is easy to pick-up and my 2 hour class once a week goes by way too quickly.
So I am setting up my own glass work area at home, I have already made my own work table complete with lights and the finished panels will be incorporated into my woodwork.
Check out what is going on in your local community, as classes for all different types of crafts are run in these environments.

I enjoy making things but because of an injury in my neck, I have bad feeling in my fingertips so crochet and knitting are difficult. I do plastic canvas, I prefer the 7 mesh but there are different sizes. You get a pattern and cut out the plastic canvas as instructed and then stitch with a dull 16-18 gauge needle and yarn. I started with making coasters and now make little purse accesories, banks, bookends, wall hangings, etc. You can try your local library. They should have a few books on it and maybe even a magazine with projects in them like Annie’s Plastic Canvas. I also like to sew but my machine is on the fritz and don’t know if I should fix it or get a new one. I love to read also! Try reading a series. I enjoy W.E.B. Griffin’s novel series’ about the military and the one about Police. I also like John Grishom. A nice nature author is Gene Stratton-Porter, she wrote about her life in the “Limberlost” of Indiana. She has titles dating back to 1906 or so. She lived into her 80’s and died in California, I do believe. Some of her books were made into movies. Her most popular books are “Freckles” and “Girl of the Limberlost”.
I also collect cook books with area stories in them, like from Appalatia. They have sayings from old times. The stories are good and the recipes different. My hubby also collected all of the “FoxFire” series. These 12-13 books are interviews that were made with people from the “hills” by students. They write as they were told, the old broken up type. And it tells how to make things like in pioneer days. I find these stories intriging! Hope this helps! (I’m 43 years old)

You are still young and energetic. I would advise you to do some exercises like jogging, gardening or join any club in your community. By joining club you will find somebody that will cheer you up and your life will be enjoyable.

I like to make jewely. It doesn’t take long to make a simple set, very satisfying. It isn’t like embroidering a tablecloth, which you might have to wait months/years to see the results.
You can even learn to make your own beads, then string them, blow your own glass, use clay.
Lots of classes out there, on line and and hobby and bead stores. And, if you get proficient at it, they make great gifts, and some people sell them online, or among friends, neighbors or co-workers.
Start up isn’t expensive, 3 tools, a layout board, and the jewelry supplies for each piece of jewelry. After that, you can invest more, for storage, and tools for fancier projects.
And the basic string the beads, and put a clasp on them is easy, my friend taught me in 20 minutes.
Try Michaels.com for some ideas, and there was a video on crimping technique[the way you keep the beads on the piece, it is a little bead that you squeeze around the Beadalon wire].
You didn’t say what kind of books you read, but try Diana Galbadon, she wrote a whole series of historical romance novels , I love them. Big thick juicy, well written, thought I had been transported back in time.

Check out your local crafting shop.
There are many kits you can purchase including:
    paper making
    candle making
    embroidery
    latchhook
    cross stitch
    basic woodworking
    stenciling
    painting
    bead making
    jewelry kits
    and more.

Most are relatively inexpensive, and come with the directions and supplies you need. It’s an excellent way to sample things and find what interests you. Once you do, it’s easy enough to look more indepth at that particular area.
Best of luck, and happy crafting.

Okay…..creativity is the thing……I love to do all kinds of crafts…..and now it is right at your finger tips with a computer. I’ve done all kinds of crafts such as ceramics, floral arrangements, beading, paper crafting, rubber stamping and scrapbooking. How about rubber stamping and scrapbooking? Everyone has pictures just laying around or in “plain” albums. Why not make yours reflect you!!! Or learn how to make your own greeting cards……it’s easy and could become a business.

I am a Creative Consultant for The Angel Company and my website is http://stamps4u.ismyangel.net. Check it out and see what you think. If you want to order anything contact me so that you can get the monthly specials.

Try coin collecting. It doesn’t have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. You can go through and pull out the better ones (there are books to help with this or websites).

The coins that you don’t want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it’s often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don’t search the same boxes over and over).

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, etc.

I’ve taken up dolls house & miniatures as a hobby (I started at age 38, I’m now 40), as well as jewellery making/beading – although someone has already covered that topic.

You can purchase a dolls house very reasonably on ebay, or look at jumble sales, boot sales or ads in local papers for second hand ones. You can have hours of fun decorating it – I get free wallpaper samples from shops with tiny patterns on – not strictly ethical but needs must! You can also buy paint samples – one pot goes a very long way.

You can spend hours on ebay searching for furnishings, and make soft furnishings out of scrap materials. Be creative, use cut down cocktail sticks dipped in paint as pencils and make pen pots out of inexpensive jewellery wire wrapped around the end of a pen. You can buy no-bake craft clay and make fruit or cakes – anything you want, your imagination is the only thing that will hold you back!

Bug friends and family to save the tops off toiletries – anything that looks like you can make it into something.

I work on a scale of 1/12 – ie if you want to make a photo frame and it would be 18 inches ‘our’ size, then make it 1 1/2 inches in size for your dolls house. It’s the most common scale to work to.

You don’t have to buy a dolls house – you can make ’scenes’ by using three or four pieces of wood – two or three as the walls and one as the floor – fix the pieces together and you have an instant room – or garden – or pub… whatever takes your fancy. Then you can decide on a theme, decorate it and play for hours making things and arranging it. When you get bored of the scene, just redecorate it and make it into something else.

How about making a scene for Christmas, wrap lots of tiny little ‘presents’ and put them under your tree next to the fire, with clay nibbles on the little table and a cat asleep in her basket?

I have a tray I keep my little craft paints on (kids’ paints) and all sorts of tools – pliers, sharp knife etc. When I feel crafty I pop it on my lap in front of the tv and let my imagination take over.
